Think back to when we didn’t have to worry about the negative effects we and our products had on our environment. Too bad we didn’t know what would happen many years later until it would be too late. Biodiversity is a necessary part of our world as a whole. When lost, it affects industries, the environment, agriculture, and most important human health.

            Studies have shown that some places, such as India, are losing biodiversity at a very fast rate. India used to be known for its areas of some of the richest biodiversity in the world. Now, it’s constantly being featured for its many extinct or endangered species of plants and animals.  The government is making some effort at conserving biological diversity, but their efforts have proven to be ineffective. Take India as an example others should learn from. We have to start improving our efforts to conserve biodiversity around the world. If we don’t, the end result will be disaster.

            Let’s go back to the India example for a moment. One of their problems is the expansion of agriculture in areas that were previously wild. This is happening all over the world. We need to find a way to make modified crops to help with this problem. Furthermore, living organisms regulate the pollination of crops. So, if we don’t have those organisms, we can’t have those crops, which are necessary for human life.

            View this from another aspect. Important industries depend on biodiversity. Many medical companies rely on natural plants to make their drugs. A recent study shows that ten of the world’s top twenty-five drugs are made from natural resources. If those sources are not protected, some people could die because the medicine they desperately need cannot be produced. All in all, biodiversity greatly impacts human health.

            Biodiversity helps with the ecosystem production, and also prevents and helps us recover from natural disasters. Many living organisms, small or large, regulate gaseous wastes in our atmosphere. For example, trees and plants help produce the oxygen we breathe. So, if those trees become extinct further down the road, life cannot exist. In addition, other organisms are responsible for decomposition and the production of fertile soil. This, in return, produces soil for the crops, which then gives us food. Also, organisms such as birds, insects, and fungi are responsible for pest control. This allows for our crops to be protected without using harmful pesticides that pests can build a resistance to.

            It is hard to think about everything that biodiversity does for us. When it comes down to it, everything depends on biodiversity. Our economy relies on it, medical companies depend on it, the environment relies on it, and most importantly, the people rely on it. Why have the gift of biodiversity, so why would we let it waste away? It has to be protected more effectively in order to ensure the lives of all around the world. We should use India as an example of what could happen all over the world. The bottom line is; without biodiversity, life cannot continue. We will not be able to prevent a disaster.
